Why Would I Need Key By Photo?

Key By Photo is an optional service for our customers, however if you are programming a turnkey ignition vehicle know you must have your key cut. The cut doesn't need to be from Tom's Key Company but it will be a necessity in order to program and have a full functioning key. It is important to note that none of our keys come cut, nor automatically include cutting. Key By Photo is a separate service.

Tom's Key Company offers Key By Photo as a simple way to provide a full service for programming of your keys. However, we gladly state it is optional although it is a way to save you time and make your spare key project faster and simpler, as not having your key cut by us would require you to find someone to cut your key.

How Does Key By Photo Work?

Provided adequate photos, we take those photos and scan them via “too smart of technology for me to explain.” From there our smart tech throws back a few codes for your key, which are then inputted to a key cutting machine, and voila! You have yourself a new key ready to ship out to you.

How Accurate is Key By Photo?

Provided adequate photos and these photos meeting our photo standards, Tom's Key Company Key By Photo has a general 95% accuracy. In other words only 1 in 20 keys may cause us some type of issue.

What Do Adequate Photos Look Like?

To take proper photos of your key it does require you to slightly tap into your inner photographer. Key By Photo requirements are as follows:

Free of imperfections - Keys photos should be clear of blemishes, marks, or blurs. Especially blurs as this is one of our most common mistakes and reasons why many orders are held back. We recommend that once you take your photos you review them for imperfections.
Solid Background Only - Key photos should be taken on a solid background for proper contrast and best recognition by our photo reader. Key should not be on the palm of your hand, or floating in the air. A table, a countertop, a car hood, all these are very accessible places and make for great key photography.
Focus on the blade - Keys should primarily focus on the blade and its cuts upon the blade. We only need the blade to be the focal point, not the buttons on your keys or your key chains (although your keychain(s) might be awesome).
The key should be flat - The key should only lie flat. We need no further angels or positions. Simply laying flat gets it done.
Well lit and balanced - Your photos should be well lit, but also not overly exposed to light as this can add too much shine to the blade and make the cuts unreadable. Balance is key here (no pun intended).

Unfortunately, no. Our machines are only calibrated for car keys and nothing else.

Can I Have a Car Key Not Purchased at Tom’s Key Company Cut By Your Key By Photo Technology?

Why Must My Key Be Cut?

A key must be cut only when you are programming a traditional turn key ignition vehicle, this is because you will need to turn the ignition to the "on" position with your new key in order to program.

When it comes to smart keys, the auxiliary key blade doesn't necessarily have to be cut unless you are looking for that spare emergency key blade.

What If My Keys are Cut Incorrectly?

It’s a very common complaint we see out in the automotive key world, so we thought we’d cover what is Ford “My Key” and what to do about it when looking for a spare key?

What is Ford My Key?

Ford My Key is a Ford feature used to restrict settings within the car. From speeds to speaker volumes, to not allowing the radio to function if seat belts aren’t on, Ford My Key allows an individual to control all these features and a few more, in order to promote good driving habits for oneself, insurance benefits, or to prevent young drivers from… you know doing “young driver things.”

Okay great, but what do you do with your “My Key” if somehow you got stuck with it as a sole key option for your vehicle? And how can you change these settings?

What is An Admin Key?

An Admin Key will fix all your troubles. If you’re reading this blog article you may, or may not be familiar with an Admin Key. An Admin Key is essentially a key that has no “My Key” restrictions upon it. Additionally, it can control the restrictions on any “My Key” keys paired with your vehicle. In order for you to have a “My Key” sometime in the vehicle's history there had to be an administration key which programmed the second key to be a “My Key.”

So that brings up a more important question…

If I Create a Spare Key with Tom’s Key Company Will it be an Admin Key?

The great news is, yes! Any new spare key with Tom’s Key Company will register as an admin key. From here you then have the ability to control the restrictions on the remaining “My Key” keys, and even make them unrestricted if you so please.

Should I Have My Key Restrictions? Does Turning Off My Key Affect My Vehicle?

Depending on whether you’re trying to practice safe driving habits, plan to let someone else borrow your vehicle, or simply wish to keep your family and yourself safe, it is always a good feature to have. However, if you find that you prefer the liberty of making your own wise decisions then not having “My Key” on will not affect your vehicle in any way.

How Do I Turn On/Off My Key Restrictions?

My Key can be accessed from your vehicle’s center display dashboard, under your vehicle settings. Then enter “My Key” settings. In order to edit the settings for “My Key” you will need an Admin Key within the ignition. Each vehicle has a bit of a different process for editing, adding, or removing a “My Key” and we recommend that you review your vehicle’s owner’s manual to best direct you but the basics look something like this:

Add a My Key - Have an Admin Key in the ignition and place the spare key into a “My Key” slot. A “My Key” slot varies on the type of vehicle. Different locations “My Key” slots are typically found: under the steering wheel, within the glove compartment, inside the center compartment between both front seats, or on the center console. (This differs for turn key ignitions when compared to push to start, so please review your vehicle's owner's manual.)

To add the wanted “My Key” insert the second key into the “My Key” slot, then proceed to the on screen settings under “My Key.” Add all the wanted settings then press “Create My Key.” Sometimes this requires you to hold down a button. Then after a few seconds you should have a “My Key.”

Edit a My Key - To edit a “My Key” the Admin Key will have to be present. With the Admin key present it will be as easy as inputting the Admin Key into the ignition and going under the “My Key” settings. From here you will be able to edit volume settings, seat belt tone settings, speed setting, and a few others.

Remove a My Key - To remove a “My Key” it is as simple as editing a “My Key.” Under the same settings of “My Key” you will find the “Clear My Key” setting. From here you can simply press (and sometimes hold) “Clear My Keys” and all “My Keys” will be cleared.

“My Keys” can be a bit of a pain to deal with but as you can see it is a very manageable situation. Keep your “My Key,” erase it, or edit it. It can all be done with Tom’s Key Company.

HOW DOES THIS ALL WORK?

Tom's Key Company offers you a DIY (Do it yourself) solution in just a few steps and with only a handful of things to know.

The first things to know are a few things about your vehicle, -but don’t worry! Nothing too technical. Just the basics like your vehicle’s year, make, model, and whether it’s turn key ignition or push to start. Once you have this information in mind it's time for a quick search.

You’ll then input the information of your vehicle within our website search (located on our homepage) and you will be thrown back a few options of items to choose from, which leads us into our next section..

WHAT DO I BUY?

In most instances all vehicles will require 3 things: A programmer, a key, and a key cut. So what are you going to need to leave with in your cart? -A programmer, a key, and a key cut. Got it? Great! Simple enough, right?

Now, it's true that this isn’t always the case as you can be looking for just a key and perhaps own your own programmer, or you may have a key and just need to rent a programmer, and so on and so forth. Which is fine, as we do offer all these items separately for you to pick and choose what you need, however it is mostly the case that most customers will need all three of these items to have a fully functioning new key.

Right about now you’re probably thinking, “So why all these items and things? I thought I was just here for a key…” Well let’s get into that.

WHAT ARE ALL THESE ITEMS NECESSARY FOR CREATING A SPARE KEY AND WHY?

The Key - So as you can tell, there is a little bit more to getting a spare key for your vehicle than simply buying a new key. Buying and selecting a key is only step 1. This is because all keys for newer vehicles must be programmed and paired with your vehicle in some shape or form, or else you simply have a small shiny piece of metal you can use for a very small kabob, but definitely won’t start your car. But back to the important part… why? Well this is because back in the 90s many vehicle manufacturers decided that it would be a very good security move to create keys that paired with their vehicles specifically, in order to add a layer of anti-theft. -And this is how we end up with a need for a programmer. So let’s get into programmers a bit shall we?

The Programmer - Many vehicles will have their own way of programming. In some instances there are a few vehicles that are capable of doing onboard programming without the need for a programmer, but this is not commonly the case as most vehicles require some sort of independent programmer. It is also important to note that some products like our Simple Key Kits will come with a Key and a Programmer in the box, but all other non-Simple Key Kit vehicles will require you to add this to your cart separately. Now as for the actual act of programming, we will save this for the next section.

The Key Cut - In regards to the three things you must buy previously mentioned, the last thing you will need is our optional “Key By Photo” key cutting service. This is where we use magic photo technology to create a copy of your key with a simple few pictures. We say this is optional because you have the option to have your key cut by a local locksmith or big box store, however note that this will hold back your installation, and some places will be unwilling to cut your key because you’ll cut into their profit. Additional Things to be Aware of - You will not be able to program a key for your vehicle if you do not have 1 functioning key. A “functioning key” mainly means a key that can turn the ignition and/or turn the vehicle on. What is a programmer, how does it work, and why is it needed?

Let’s start with the biggest and most obvious questions:

What is a programmer?: A programmer here at Tom’s Key usually has a rectangular form and exists to pair a new key to your vehicle.

Why do you need one?: Essentially because without a programmer you have “A” key but not “The” key for your vehicle. Without a programmer you essentially have a shiny kabob that may open your doors, but outside of that won’t give you full functionality of your vehicle.

How does a programmer work?: All vehicles need the key of their vehicle to communicate with their vehicle. In order to create this communication you need a programmer. Think of the programmer as a mutual friend of both the car and your new key, and the programmer is doing an introduction of a soon to be new and long awesome friendship with many miles of adventure ahead of them.

Why are there different types of programmers?

It should be no surprise that different vehicles have different ways of doing things, this means different programming systems. This is the reason why there are different types of programmers and it really comes down to what kind of vehicle you have. But at Tom’s Key Company we keep it simple and offer 3 different types of programmer possibilities, again all depending on your vehicle type.

What are Tom’s Key 3 different types of programmers?

The 3 different types of programmers that Tom’s Key Company offers are the TSL programmers, the EZ Installer, and the Simple Key variety.

What are the differences between the 3 different types of programmers?

Let’s break it down:

TSLs: When referring to the TSLs we are talking about both the TSL-1 and TSL-2. These type of programmers are specifically designed for Toyota, Scion, and Lexus vehicles, hence the name “TSL.” They will only program vehicles of these types. So if you have any of these brands you will either need a TSL-1 or TSL-2. (To know the differences between a TSL-1 and TSL-2 we will cover this in a more detailed article focused only on the TSL programmers in the near future).

Important note: (TSLs are rentals that come with a fully refundable deposit fee found at check out.)

EZ Installer: The EZ installer has a large use case for mainly American cars, but this is not the rule nor its sole definer, but is just what comes to mind on how to easily define this programmer for general audiences. It is however one of the more exciting programmers because it has the capability to program a lot of different cars and it is a product that continues to evolve with its vehicle capabilities.

Important note: (EZ Installers are rentals that come with a fully refundable deposit fee found at check out.)

Simple Key: Simple Key focuses on providing “kits” which come with both key and programmer in one purchase. Each key kit can program up to 8 times and can be very useful for future use cases as this is a programmer you keep rather than rent.

What programmer is right for me?

What do I need to program a new key?

The following are all things required to make sure programming can go smoothly:

Matching part numbers, FCCID, and items:

For this you can use our vehicle selection tool. It does the work for you and moves your selection into smaller categories specifically for your make, model, and year of your vehicle. From here you are thrown back a small list of items that will show you all compatible items. It is important that within this list given back you, you still make sure that all part numbers and FCCIDs match your current key, although the parts may look similar to what you have.

In order to find your FCCID for your vehicle's key you will need to refer to your vehicle's handbook or inspect the inside of your key.

A functional key or working key:  
A "working" or "functional" key is simply a key that can turn your ignition and/ or turn on your vehicle.
This is the only requirement needed to program a key or fob with Tom's Key Company products and nothing else.
If your key is capable of turning on your vehicle, then you have a "working" or "functional" key.

Can one programmer program all of my vehicles?

The most truthful answer is “maybe.” It really all depends on what kind of programmer is available for your vehicle.

In the case of Simple Key Kits the programmer can only program one vehicle only, as this type of programmer pairs to your vehicle’s vin and will not allow for further programming on any other vehicle.

For the TSL you will have the option to program multiple vehicles, so long as the vehicle you own can be paired by these tools.

For the EZ Installer, this particular rental programmer pairs with the vin of the vehicle being programmed and needs to be cleared back at our facility, therefore you will not be able to program multiple vehicles with this rental.

Can one programmer program multiple keys?

So long as it is the same vehicle and your vehicle's memory allows it, yes.

How much is a programmer?

This depends on the type of programmer you need. For our rentals the pricing is as follows:

What is a deposit fee? How much is the deposit fee?

Deposit fees for our programmers are as follows:

Deposit fees exist to protect our products and assure they get back to us.

Master Key or Valet Key? Distinction for Toyota, Scion, and Lexus.

Figuring out whether you have a master key or valet key is very important prior to taking on the project of creating a new spare key for your vehicle. This is especially important for Toyota, Scion, and Lexus vehicles where security systems may prevent you from creating a new spare key. Here are the instructions on how to know whether you have a Master Key or a Valet Key for your Toyota, Scion, or Lexus vehicles.

In order to determine if you have a master key, please follow these steps:

1. Without the key in the ignition, locate the blinking red security light on your dashboard. (Position of the security light can vary, and can also be found on the clock dash and center console.)

2. Insert the key into the ignition without turning.

Does the blinking red light turn solid and then turn off after approximately 2 seconds? Or does it stop blinking and turn off immediately?

If the light stops blinking and immediately turns off, this means you have a master key, if the light turns solid and then turns off after 2 seconds, this means you have a valet key. To visually see what this looks like please reference the video attached to this article.

A further test to double check is your glove box. Glove box locks can only be locked or unlocked with Master keys. If you cannot turn the lock in your glove box this is an indication that your key is a valet key.

A final way to know whether you have a master key or a valet key would be the color of the head of the key. If you have a black head key this means you have a master key, if you have a gray head key this means you have a valet key.

Important Notes

Duty Charges - All shipments using Basic International and Economy International from the US to Canada are subject to Canadian duty charges. Unfortunately, we cannot determine this duty and it is completely independent of any shipping charges from Tomskey.com.

UPS Brokerage Fee - UPS charges Canadian customers a "brokerage fee" in addition to duty when bringing packages across the border. The fee usually ranges from $40-$80USD depending on the value of the shipment. To avoid this fee, we suggest Canadian customers select USPS Priority. Tomskey.com does not provide refunds or credits for the customs duty fee or USPS/UPS brokerage fees.

Our Shipping Pledge

Orders received by 10:00 am EST ship the same day in most cases so long as orders are placed on a business day (Monday - Friday with the exception of holidays).

Please be aware shipping can slightly vary and can take 1-3 business days, especially in the event of needing key cutting processing time.

Expedited Shipping

Please be aware that the timeframe for all expedited shipping orders starts the products leave our warehouse, not the moment the order is placed on our website. This is due to processing times. Shipping days are counted in business days. Weekend dates are not counted.

Average Delivery Times

Orders shipped to the West coast usually take 2-3 business days. Orders shipped to the East coast usually take 3-5 business days. Orders to Canada take 4-8 business days (Excluding custom processing times which can drastically vary and take as little or as much as 1 day to 4 weeks to clear).

Liability Release

Customers that use UPS My Choice, FedEx Delivery Manager, leave written notes for drivers, or an equivalent service that authorizes the release of a package when nobody is home are required to accept responsibility for any loss or damage to the package after it has been released at the address. Proof of delivery from the courier service will serve as conclusive evidence that the package was delivered successfully and that the customer will accept any loss or damage to the package after it has been released at the delivery address. Tomskey.com is not responsible for stolen packages and/or damage and loss when the customer authorizes the release using these services or changes the delivery address.

FAQs About Shipping

What should I do if tracking shows delivered but I haven't received my package?

If your tracking information received via email indicates that your order has been delivered but you have not received it, please contact us at Help@tomskey.com. Sometimes tracking details can be incorrectly tagged due to errors in the scanning process by our shipping partners. Our team will verify that the tracking label reflects the correct shipping address and will monitor the shipping status. If the issue persists after a specified time frame, or if your package hasn’t arrived within the expected delivery period, please inform us so we can take further action.

What should I do if my shipping address is wrong and I need to change it?

If you need to change the shipping address for an order that has already been processed, it may not be possible to make adjustments. Once an order has reached the shipping stage and is in transit, the shipping address cannot be altered. In such cases, it is recommended to track the order using the provided tracking information. However, it’s crucial for customers to ensure the accuracy of the shipping address during checkout, as responsibility for delivery based on incorrect information provided at checkout lies with the customer. If a delivery error is due to an error on our end, please inform us immediately so that we can investigate and follow the appropriate internal procedures.

What should I do if I haven't received my order or shipping confirmation?

If you’ve been waiting for your order and have not received a shipping confirmation, please reach out to our customer service team. Occasionally, delays can occur due to errors in the order being captured in our system or due to stock availability issues. We will investigate the delay and provide you with an update as soon as possible. If your order is affected by a stocking issue, we will fulfill it immediately upon restock and send you a confirmation email with the tracking details. Can orders be shipped internationally?

Currently, our products can only be shipped within the US and Canada. If you are located outside of these areas and interested in making a purchase, we recommend accessing our store through an international platform if it’s available. What if my tracking number is incorrect?

Welcome to our Tom’s Key EZ Install Guide for Toyota, Scion, or Lexus vehicles. This EZ Install Guide article was designed to aid new customers or potential new customers understand the programming processes for Toyota, Scion, and Lexus vehicles. In this EZ guide we will guide you through the process of programming a new traditional turn key for Toyota, Lexus, or Scion vehicles using the first generation TSL-1 Programmer from Tom's Key Company. Although the video content is on a Toyota vehicle, the programming process is generally similar for any Toyota, Scion, and Lexus vehicles using a TSL-1 Programmer and can be used as reference material for other installations of these vehicles.

Please be aware that when programming new keys, there are two portions to the procedure: programming the key, and programming your vehicle’s remote (If needed and available). It is important to note that there is no need to pair both and one can be done without the other.

Prior Key Step: Master Key

Prior to anything, a first key step to take is making certain that the key you have is a master key, as you will only be able to program a new key using a TSL-1 only if you have a master key in your possession. To know if you have a master key please review the following content here.

The Programming Process

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to program your new spare key so that you may gauge the programmer’s use and simplicity.

Step 1: Order the Correct Items Needed for your Installation and Double Check Upon Reception

To get started, place an order through our website (Tomskey.com). Assure you use our product picking tools, our help center, or customer support team options on our website to assure you have all the proper items necessary in order to create a new spare key. In most cases you will need a key, a programmer, and a key cut in your cart to experience our full service. The only time this would not be the case is if you have your own solution for each individual item that would be needed and are only looking for some of our services/ products but not all. Accuracy is very important when it comes to installation, it is why we include it as a step in this guide, so please take full advantage of our tools and support team to assure accuracy of items that will be needed for your new spare key project.

Most often than not during purchase there should be a compatibility check to make sure all items purchased are compatible with your vehicle, however, it is recommended to do a second compatibility check with all items in hand in order to make certain that everything you received is correct prior to programming, as this can save you loads of time in the rare event that a mistake was made during fulfillment or even purchase.

To double check compatibility, compare your original key(s) to your newly received key(s). At first glance the keys should be very similar or exactly identical. They should also have matching key markings located at the base of the key. The symbols will typically be a dot, a “G,” or an “H”. If you find that your original key does not have these markings it can be that your vehicle does not have to be paired with a specific chip and any key will do.

For remotes, in most cases remotes should also resemble one another, however more importantly, knowing your remote(s) and vehicle’s matching FCCID is imperative. To simplify, an FCCID is simply a code that denotes compatibility for us here at Tom’s Key Company between a remote and vehicle’s frequency. Step 2: Plugging in the Extension Cable

Locate the OBD2 port in your vehicle. It is usually a wide aperture that can be found near your vehicle’s foot brake or the surrounding area. In some cases, you may need to remove a panel or a piece of plastic to access it.

Take the supplied extension cable, line it up, and plug it into the OBD2 port. Assure it is gently but properly inserted, as having an incorrectly inserted cable can lead to issues during programming.

Step 3: Connect the Programmer

Connect the programmer to the cable and plug it in tightly to ensure it doesn't accidentally come disconnected during the programming process.

Once connected, you should hear the programmer beep.

Step 4: Locate Your Security Light

Before we begin programming your new key(s), locate the security light in your vehicle which blinks when no keys are in the ignition. The security light is a blinking red light that indicates whether functional keys are in the ignition. It can be found in different locations depending on the model and year of your vehicle. Look for it around the ignition, on the dashboard, near the steering wheel vents, or central dash of your vehicle. Once you've located the security light, we can proceed to program the keys.

Step 5: Set the Programmer to Key Pairing or Remote Pairing Mode

Before programming make sure to set the switch on the programmer to the correct setting, this being whether you wish to program a key or remote. Once properly set progress to programming.

Step 6: Program the Key and Remote

Key Process

Turn your vehicle to the “on'' position with your original functioning key by moving the ignition two clicks forward without revving the ignition to turn the engine on. Once in the “on” position you should hear the programmer beep. Within 10-20 seconds of this beeping you should also see your security light turn solid red with no type of blinking pattern. This means your vehicle is ready to be paired with a new key.

Proceed by removing your original key from the ignition and inserting your new key into the ignition, you do not need to turn this key it can simply sit in the ignition as it pairs. At this point watch the security light, while your new key is inserted in the ignition you should begin to see your security blink every two seconds. That lets us know that your key is pairing, this should take 60 seconds. Once the blinking stops your key is fully paired.

Remote Process

In addition to programming new keys, you can also program alarm remote fobs using our TSL-1 Programmer. To do this, you will need a master key. Proceed by setting your TSL-1 programmer switch found on the programmer to the “remote” programming side. Once this is done, using your master key turn your ignition to the “on” position without revving or starting your engine. Proceed to plug in your TSL-1 programmer and listen for a repetitive beep.

Once your TSL-1 programmer begins beeping repeatedly, open the driver’s door then press the lock and unlock buttons on your new key/ remote at the same time, followed by pressing the lock button once more. Congratulations, you have successfully programmed your new remote(s), it’s that easy. To program more remotes repeat the process.

Remember Toyotas, Scion, and Lexus do have a maximum amount of keys and remotes they can have programmed to their memory. If you find that a key or remote does not take, it can be for these reasons, in which case you will need further assistance. Step 7: Test the Key(s) and Remote(s)

Once you have programmed your new keys, it is important to test them to ensure they work properly. Check if they turn on your vehicle’s engine, as well as activate the alarm and power locks if any remotes were programmed.

For any Key By Photo miscut keys exchanges, DO NOT send back your key(s) unless instructed to do so by an agent. Simply put in an exchange request and we will have a new key cut and shipped out to you.

When should I file a return?
If you receive incorrect items, items that don't work, or you ordered the incorrect items these are all valid reasons to create a return.

How Long Does It Take Until My Refund is Processed?

Tom’s Key TSL (TSL-1 and TSL-2) General Programmer Informational Guide

Overview

The following is an informational guide on our TSL products. This will include both the TSL-1 and TSL-2 general information. Information is subject to change in light of new developments or tools.

What is a TSL programmer?

The TSL programmer’s use is in its name. It is a programmer specifically designed for Toyota spectrum vehicles: Toyota, Scion, and Lexus.

What’s the difference between a TSL-1 and a TSL-2?

The TSL-1 is mainly capable of programming transponder keys and basic remotes. The TSL-2 programmer, on the other hand, has the TSL-1’s capability to program both transponder keys and basic remotes, as well as smart fobs for push-button start vehicles. Additionally, it can also erase old or lost keys to your vehicle. Because of its advanced capabilities, the TSL-2 programmer is a slight bit more expensive than the TSL-1.

Can I purchase a TSL programmer?

Both the TSL-1 and TSL-2 are currently only for rental.

How long is the rental period for a TSL programmer?

Rental periods for both the TSL-1 and TSL-2 are for 30 days from the date you receive the product. In the event that you are having problems we can extend the rental period so long as this is communicated, therefore your deposit will not be deducted in any kind of way.

Can the TSL programmers program more than one vehicle?

Both the TSL-1 and the TSL-2 can program multiple vehicles with one rental. Meaning if you have multiple Toyotas you wish to program you would only need to rent one programming unit.

What is the programming process like?

Depending on whether you’re programming a key, remote or both, it is pretty simple.
The only thing to keep in mind is that programming a key and a remote are two different processes although sometimes your key is a 2 in 1 remote key.
Programming is usually a few dozen steps but they are straight forward and only occasionally cause hiccups. For examples on what TSL programming is like please visit our Toyota YouTube playlist.

Will the TSL programmer work for a key not purchased from your website?

In most situations, yes. However we can’t fully guarantee this as this is a variable that can’t be proven through testing, as there are millions of different types of keys in the world. But in theory they all use similar tools and we find that in most cases the TSL programmers are successful.

What can prevent me from programming using a TSL programmer?

Usually not having a master key is a dead stop in anyone's programming project. It is essential to make certain that you have a master key for your Toyota, Scion, or Lexus vehicle and not a valet key, as a valet key will not be able to program a new spare key.

TSL (TSL-1 and TSL-2) Troubleshooting Guide

Tom’s Key TSL (TSL-1 and TSL-2) Programmer Troubleshooting Guide

Overview

The following is an informational guide on our TSL products and how to troubleshoot them in the event that troubleshooting does not go according to the manual. This will include both TSL-1 and TSL-2 troubleshooting broken down into two different sections.

Customer’s should only review the following document after making sure the battery on any item(s) used for programming are fully charged, part numbers and compatibility of items used for programming match, the owner of the vehicle is programming with a master key and not a valet key, and no clear damage is found upon the product. Information is subject to change in light of new developments or tools.

Section 1: TSL-1

Part 1: Key Programming Issues

The TSL-1 did not beep after plugging it into the OBD2 port

OBD2 port may not be functioning properly - Check if there is electricity coming from your OBD2 port. This would be a good time to use any other OBD2 port devices to test this.

If the Check Engine light does not illuminate, you can be sure that you have a fuse issue. It is most likely the case that your fuse is blown and must be replaced. Replacing the fuse would fix the issue.

The programmer could be defective - If the above is checked and we simply get no reaction from the device it is very likely that we are experiencing a faulty device and a replacement would need to be created by a Tom’s Key agent. Reach out at Help@tomskey.com and we’ll get you taken care of.

TSL-1 only beeps once after plugging into the OBD2 (No further beeps)

Check for the following -

No steps were missed
All doors, trunk, and hood were properly closed
Existing key was not running the engine but simply in the “on” position
The 15 second time limit to plug in the programmer was NOT exceeded

If you believe any of the steps above were improperly done, refresh the vehicle’s programming mode. Unplug the programmer, start the vehicle and leave the vehicle running for 30 seconds, open and shut the doors, then lastly reintroduce the device as found in your directions.

Continuous failure - If all steps above are properly followed and reattempted with no result at this point there is suspicion to believe that the programmer is faulty. From here we may recommend attempting a TSL-2 as the reason for failure can be something faulty with the programmer or the actual programming into your vehicle. Please reach out to Help@tomskey.com where we’ll assist you in continuing to diagnose and provide the best solution for a replacement.

The security light won’t turn solid (Step 15 of TSL-1 key programming)

The most likely possibility for this issue has to do with compatibility and could be any of the following reasons:

Not programming with a Master Key
The vehicle is not compatible with the TSL-1
Vehicle’s using G chip (2009 - 2016 Chip GQ429T)
Tundra’s using G chip Transponder key

In any of the following situations a replacement for a TSL-2 will be needed.

TSL-1 makes a continuous nonstop beeping sound (Step 16 of TSL-1 Key Programming)

In some vehicles this does tend to be the unfortunate case. Know that this is normal however, and programming should proceed without opening the doors or doing anything to try to address the beeping until programming is fully completed.

The security light still blinks after 90 seconds with new key in the ignition (Step 17 of TSL-1 key programming)

In this instance the security light will be a dead giveaway of what the issue is relative to its flashing code.

Code Types:

Every 2 Seconds Flashing Code - If the light blinks every 2 second then the key can be operating normally and could be properly paired with your vehicle. To test this remove the programmer, open and shut your doors, and attempt to turn on your vehicle.

If this fails and you find that the light is still blinking after reinserting the key into the ignition then programming has failed and you will need to reattempt.

2-1 Code - A code that blinks twice followed by 1 blink means “Programming failure.”

Programming failure can occur due to improperly following directions of programming, key compatibility issues, issues with the vehicle’s computer, issues with the connectivity of all instruments included, or a faulty key chip.

If all these items have been checked and programming has been reattempted at least 3 times, and each time proper reset has been done (Unplugging all items, turning on vehicle to run for 30 seconds, open and close the doors, programmer retry) then a key replacement and/ or programmer replacement may be needed.

2-2 Code - A code that blinks twice, followed by two more blinks means “Key Already Programmed.”

If you find this to be the case, unplug all items, open and close the vehicle’s doors, then follow to turn the ignition to “run”. Key should be fully functional. If this is not the case please reach out to one of our agents.

2-3 Code - A code that blinks twice followed by three more blinks means “Maximum Amount of Keys are Programmed to the Vehicle.”

At this point if you have a TSL-1 you will need to contact our customer support as you will need a TSL-2 which is capable of erasing keys on your vehicle’s memory of keys. A support agent will accommodate a replacement at little to no cost.

Section 1: TSL-1

Part 2: Remote Programming Issues

No Long Beep (Step 14 and/or Step 15 of Remote Programming)

This is a clear indication that the TSL-1 and your vehicle’s ECU are not communicating properly. This can be an issue with the vehicle or the programmer and the best solution would be a replacement to a TSL-2, as the issue can be due to faulty parts but can also be that it needs upgraded compatibility that the TSL-2 can offer. Attempting to program with a TSL-2 will make this clear.

TSL-1 Holds a Continuous Beep After Pressing Buttons on Remote (Step 16 of Remote Programming)

The following are reasons for the TSL-1 to Hold a Continuous Beep During Step 16 of Remote Programming:

Door Locks Did Not Cycle (No Success Programming Indicator) - Some Toyotas will not cycle the locks which will cause continuous beeping. To best check if the remote programming was successful proceed to remove the programmer and test the programming by pressing the remote buttons. You should find success, if this is not the case attempt reprogramming while considering all the options below as possibilities that may need testing.

Weak or Dead Remote Batteries - Weak of dead batteries can lead to continuous beeping and in some cases you’ll find that programming has failed due to this. It is important to check that the batteries are healthy or you will unlikely be able to complete programming.

Remote Not Compatible with the Vehicle - If you continue finding programming failure for your remote, it is important to double check that the compatibility is correct. Check any part numbers, circuit board numbers, FCCID, or key markings to make sure that compatibility is correct as this will be a dead stop in programming in not correct.

Faulty Remote - If batteries, reattempts, and compatibility checks have been done we cannot rule out a faulty remote. In this case you would need to contact our support agents. They will double check these parameters with you then proceed with replacement or refund options.
To speed things along please confirm with an agent that you have reviewed this document and have done the basic checks of multiple attempts, battery replacement, and have checked and have 100% assured compatibility.

All seemed to go well with the TSL-1 programming yet the remote still won’t work

In this instance there can be a few reasons as to why your remote is not functioning:

Key was left in the ignition while testing remote buttons
Doors are open while testing remote buttons
Incorrectly processed step(s) during programming
Weak or dead batteries
Faulty remote

Section 2: TSL-2

Part 1: Basic Issues with Programmer and Phone

TSL-2 Lights not powering on after being connected to OBD2

The following are usual causes for this instance to occur:

OBD2 of vehicle is not functioning properly
Items are not properly connected
Defective programmer

Issue	Solutions
OBD2 of vehicle is not functioning properly	Test OBD2 with other devices. Check fuses if “Check Engine”light does not come on with programmer in OBD2 port
Items are not properly connected	Remove items, inspect ports and connections, clean ports and connections with a rag, reinsert and reattempt programming.
Defective programmer	Contact Tom’s Key support, communicate items all items above have been attempted and request a replacement.

TSL-2 is not bluetooth paired to provided phone (Red Sticker)

If your rental TSL-2 (Red Sticker) and Tom’s Key provided programming phone are not paired and the bluetooth sectioned light appears red, enter the X100T programming app within the phone and click “immobilization.” The red light on your TSL-2 should now turn blue.

If failure occurs after many attempts contact Tom’s Key support so that we may provide a replacement.

Note: as an auxiliary option the X100T app can be also attempted to be uploaded on a customer’s phone from the app store. This would provide an immediate resolution in some instances.

TSL-2 is not bluetooth paired to provided phone (Blue Sticker)

If your rental TSL-2 (Blue Sticker) and Tom’s Key provided programming phone are not paired enter the “Make My Key” app, once the app fires up a connection should be made.

If normal pairing fails after trying to open the “Make My Key” app a few times, proceed to open the app, hit the top left corner drop down menu found on the screen, click “settings”, click “bluetooth settings,” you should then see a “TSL2A” option to click to pair. Once you see a check on this section the TSL-2 programmer and phone will be paired.

If failure occurs after a few attempts contact Tom’s Key support so that we may provide a replacement.

Programming app for TSL-2 is not within the provided phone

In the rare event that your Tom’s Key provided programming phone does not have the programming app please contact our support team so that we may provide a replacement.

What to do if “license exception” is prompted on the TSL-2 app

Enter “activation” on the app and enter the TSL-2’s number located on the body of the TSL-2. It is important to note that you must be connected to wifi as this activation does require a connection to the internet. With this activated you should be able to proceed.

What to do if options on the phone look unusual or behave oddly

If you encounter any odd behavior with phone settings or the programming phone itself, please restart the phone as this should correct any issues. If you find that this does not work after a few attempts, please reach out to one of our Tom Key agents so that we may provide a replacement.

Section 2: TSL-2

Part 2: Programming failure issues

TSL-2 “failed to communicate” during traditional turn key programming

There are a few reasons one can encounter a “failed communication” error for traditional turnkey transponder keys:

The ignition was not turned to the “On” position - The vehicle should not be running, simply 2 clicks into the “On” position. This allows for the programmer to properly communicate with the vehicle. If this is not done properly then the “failed to communicate” prompt will activate

The incorrect “Type” was clicked during the immobilizer prompt - The correct “Type” must be chosen which corresponds with the master key:

Immobilizer “Type” Options	Type of Key Chip
Type 1("4C")	4C chip
Type 2("4D" 67 or 68)	Dot chip
Type 3("4D" 72"G")	G chip
Type 4("8A/BE"H"	H chip

Non chip key - If you are experiencing a “failed to communicate” and you find no markings on your original key, you may have a nonchip (non transponder) vehicle which does not need pairing. The key should work simply by having it cut and turning the ignition switch.

It is important to remember however that if your key has a remote portion, you will need to program this using the programmer.

Faulty Programmer - A faulty programmer can never be ruled out. On some occasions this can be because the programmer needs to be updated in its firmware. If this is the case a replacement would be needed.

TSL-2 “failed to communicate” during remote programming

There are a few reasons one can encounter a “failed communication” error for remotes:

The ignition was not turned to the “On” position - The vehicle should not be running, simply 2 clicks into the “On” position. This allows for the programmer to properly communicate with the vehicle. If this is not done properly then the “failed to communicate” prompt will activate

Vehicle may have an aftermarket alarm system (Non Manufactured) - The vehicle can have an aftermarket alarm system not manufactured by the manufacturer. In this case programming a remote via our solutions would not work out. In order to confirm this customer should review any vehicle manuals and/or review manufacturer’s information via vin online.

Malfunctioning Remote - If the above are ruled out then a faulty remote is important to consider and would require a replacement via our support team.

TSL-2 Fail to Identify Error for (Blue Sticker TSL-2)

Failed to Identify Error (Blue Sticker) - Vehicle was not on “On” mode.

Turn Key Ignition Vehicles - In turnkey vehicle’s “On” mode will be two clicks forward without revving the ignition or pressing the brakes.
Push to Start Ignition Vehicles - In a vehicle with “Push to Start” ignition the on position is set by pressing the on button twice without pressing the vehicle brakes.

TSL-2 Operation Failed Prompt for (Smartkey/fob)

This is the failure prompt found when placing the smartkey on the ignition button of your vehicle. When this prompt appears the following should be checked:

Move at a quick but even pace - This procedure is time sensitive and will require you to complete this step at a time sensitive pace. This is because the programming window expires and your vehicle’s programming computer may timeout, which would cause you to start over.

Vehicle Must be Set to “On” - The vehicle not being set to the “On” position can cause an “Operation Failure” prompt. To set your push to start vehicle to “On,” press the “Start” button twice without putting your foot on the brake and running the engine. You will need to start the programming procedure over after doing so.

Vehicle didn't beep - The new fob was not recognized. Check the fob's battery and vehicle compatibility (part number, circuit board number, FCCID). Start the engine to refresh the process and start programming over once this is confirmed.

If nothing works, the new key could be defective and would need a replacement.

TSL-2 Operation Failed Prompt for (Turnkey vehicles)

This failure prompt is found when a turnkey is placed into the ignition of your vehicle. When this prompt appears the following should be checked:

Move at a quick but even pace - This procedure is time sensitive and will require you to complete this step at a time sensitive pace. This is because the programming window expires and your vehicle’s programming computer may timeout, which would cause you to start over.

Review Blinking Pattern - The blinking patterns of the security light gives you insight on what has transpired. If you encounter a 2-1 blinking pattern this means that programming has failed. If you have reattempted programming a few times and continue to encounter this blinking pattern it can be that your key’s chip is faulty or not properly compatible with your vehicle.

Contact a Tom’s Key support agent to help you further clarify and double check your compatibility in order to proceed forward.

TSL-2 “Programming Success” prompt but smartkey doesn’t function

The following are all reasons why you would encounter this issue:

Fob’s battery are weak/ dead - It is the most common issue we encounter at Tom’s Key. A simple battery change may immediately fix this issue.

Incompatible keys - Part numbers, FCCID, and circuit numbers should all match and be double checked for as identifying this would lead to a more immediate fix.

Vehicle’s ECU will not accept any more keys (memory full) - If you encounter full memory of keys begin the erase keys process found on the TSL-2 programmer. This will allow for the memory of your vehicle to be reset all while erasing keys that are no longer needed, or have been lost in the past.

The security light still blinks after 90 seconds although ran through key programming

In this instance the security light will be a dead giveaway of what the issue is relative to its flashing code.

Code Types:

Every 2 Seconds Flashing Code - If the light blinks every 2 second then the key is operating normally and is most likely properly paired with your vehicle. To test this remove the programmer, open and shut your doors, and attempt to turn on your vehicle.

If this fails and you find that the light is still blinking after reintroducing the key into your vehicle then programming has failed and you will need to reattempt.

2-1 Code - A code that blinks twice followed by 1 blink means “Programming failure.”

Programming failure can occur due to improperly following directions of programming, key compatibility issues, issues with the vehicle’s computer, issues with the connectivity of all instruments included, or a faulty key chip.

If all these items have been checked and programming has been reattempted at least 3 times, and each time proper reset has been done (Unplugging all items, turning on vehicle to run for 30 seconds, open and close the doors, programmer retry) then a key replacement and/ or programmer replacement may be needed.

2-2 Code - A code that blinks twice, followed by two more blinks means “Key Already Programmed.”

If you find this to be the case, unplug all items, open and close the vehicle’s doors, then follow to turn the ignition to “run”. Key should be fully functional. If this is not the case please reach out to one of our agents.

2-3 Code - A code that blinks twice followed by three more blinks means “Maximum Amount of Keys are Programmed to the Vehicle” in which case you will need to enter the ECU procedure found above.

In this EZ guide we will guide you through the process of programming a new traditional turn key for Toyota, Lexus, or Scion vehicles using the second generation TSL-2 Programmer from Tom's Key Company. Although the video content is on a Toyota vehicle, the programming process is generally similar for any Toyota, Scion, and Lexus vehicles using a TSL-2 Programmer and can be used as reference material for other installations of these vehicles.

Please be aware that when programming new keys, there are two portions to the procedure: programming the key, and programming your vehicle’s remote (If needed and available). It is important to note that there is no need to pair both and one can be done without the other.

The Programming Process

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to program your new spare key so that you may gauge the programmer’s use and simplicity.

Step 1: Order the Correct Items Needed for your Installation and Double Check Upon Reception

To get started, place an order through our website (Tomskey.com). Assure you use our product picking tools, our help center, or customer support team options on our website to assure you have all the proper items necessary in order to create a new spare key. In most cases you will need a key, a programmer, and a key cut in your cart to experience our full service. The only time this would not be the case is if you have your own solution for each individual item that would be needed and are only looking for some of our services/ products but not all. Accuracy is very important when it comes to installation, it is why we include it as a step in this guide, so please take full advantage of our tools and support team to assure accuracy of items that will be needed for your new spare key project.

Most often than not during purchase there should be a compatibility check to make sure all items purchased are compatible with your vehicle, however, it is recommended to do a second compatibility check with all items in hand in order to make certain that everything you received is correct prior to programming, as this can save you loads of time in the rare event that a mistake was made during fulfillment or even purchase.

To double check compatibility, compare your original key(s) to your newly received key(s). At first glance the keys should be very similar or exactly identical. They should also have matching key key markings located at the base of the key. The symbols will typically be a dot, a “G,” or an “H”. If you find that your original key does not have these markings it can be that your vehicle does not have to be paired with a specific chip and any key will do.

For remotes, in most cases remotes should also resemble one another, however more importantly, knowing your remote(s) and vehicle’s matching FCCID is imperative. To simplify, an FCCID is simply a code that denotes compatibility for us here at Tom’s Key Company between a remote and vehicle’s frequency. To find your vehicle’s FCCID and compare your original remote with your new received remote please review the instructions found here.

Step 2: Plugging in the Extension Cable

Locate the OBD2 port in your vehicle. It is usually a wide aperture that can be found near your vehicle’s foot brake or the surrounding area. In some cases, you may need to remove a panel or a piece of plastic to access it.

Take the supplied extension cable, line it up, and plug it into the OBD2 port. Assure it is gently but properly inserted, as having an incorrectly inserted cable can lead to issues during programming.

Step 3: Connect the Programmer

Connect the programmer to the cable and screw it in tightly to ensure it doesn't accidentally come disconnected during the programming process.

Once connected, you will see lights on the programmer indicating Bluetooth, vehicle, and power status power on.

Step 4: Assure the Provided Smartphone is Bluetooth Connected

Make sure Bluetooth is turned to “on” on the phone's settings. If this is done the “Bluetooth” portion of the programmer should go from red to blue or already be blue while interacting with the programming app on the phone during the next step.

Important Note Prior to Programming

At this point it makes logical sense to mention that prior to programming extra keys, if you desire for your keys to be the only of its kind out in the world, (especially in the case of second hand ownership of vehicle) you may want to review Step 5: Program the Key, but begin with Step 8: Erasing Keys and Remotes. This is because the erasing key procedure only leaves one working key in existence (The key you present during the erase key procedure). It would be a shame if you go and program new keys, then decide you want those keys to be the only keys in existence that match your vehicle, therefore we usually recommend this optional step prior to programming.

Step 5: Locate Your Security Light

Before we begin programming your new key(s), locate the security light in your vehicle which blinks when no keys are in the ignition. The security light is a blinking red light that indicates whether functional keys are in the ignition. It can be found in different locations depending on the model and year of your vehicle. Look for it around the ignition, on the dashboard, near the steering wheel vents, or central dash of your vehicle. Once you've located the security light, we can proceed to program the keys.

Step 6: Program the Key and Remote

Key Process

Enter the programmer app upon the phone provided by Tom’s Key Company. Once within the app select the make of vehicle you’ll be programming (Toyota, Scion, or Lexus) and accept any terms and conditions related to the vehicle after reviewing them.

Proceed to turn your vehicle ignition to the “on” position without revving the engine. Select the “Key” option on the programming phone. Then select the “By Type” option, this will lead you to select a key type. A traditional key is known as a “Transponder Key,” so in this next menu select “Transponder Key (Turn Key Ignition),” then use the “Auto Identify” button to have the programmer auto identify what kind of key type your vehicle uses. If you have any issues with the auto identification, feel free to use the vehicle look up option on the programmer, if for some reason this does not solve your issue please feel free to contact us for support at Help@tomskey.com

In order to begin creating a new key, select “Add a key.” A prompt will appear stating you will need a master key, then to insert your working key (master key) into the vehicle’s ignition and turning two clicks to the “on” position (if the key was already in the ignition you can quickly remove and reset to the “on” position) . After this is done a prompt will appear for you to remove your master key and insert your new key. Proceed to do so in a timely manner as there is a 10 second window to do this right. Once completed hit “yes” on the prompt. At this point a new prompt advising you to wait 60 seconds and to watch the blinking pattern of your security light to go off will appear. This is the pairing sequence. At the end of this time lapse you will see that the blinking has completely stopped and turned off, you now have a new working key, congratulations. To add further new keys repeat this process.

Please note if you see any other blinking pattern on your security light other than the 1 second interval blinking, or your key does not pair after 60 seconds and the blinking of your security light continues, please repeat the entire process at least two more times, if programming continues to fail please reach out at Help@tomskey.com and we will gladly help you with any issues.

Remote Process

In addition to programming new keys, you can also program alarm remote fobs using our TSL-2 Programmer. To do this, you will need a master key. Open the programming app and select “Remote” from the menu. Insert the master key into the ignition and turn it two clicks to the "on'' position and open the driver door. Then select the “Auto Identify” option on the app to have the programmer automatically identify the type of remote to add. If the auto identification does not work, just as with the key, you can choose your model from the vehicle list found within the programmer. If both these options are not available you can work your way through trial and error through the various “Types” found within the programmer menu.

Once past the remote type section, a prompt will appear indicating to turn your key to the “on” position and to open your vehicle’s driver side door, remove the key and reinsert if the key is already in the “on” position, then click “yes.” Once this is done a new prompt advising you to proceed by pressing the lock and unlock buttons on your new keys at the same time, followed by pressing the lock button once more. Note that multiple remotes can be done during this same programming cycle. Repeat the button pressing sequence in succession for any other remotes you plan to program to your vehicle. Once you are done with all the remotes you wish to program, hit “ok” on the programmer.

Congratulations, you have successfully programmed your new remote(s)!

Remember Toyotas, Scion, and Lexus do have a maximum amount of keys and remotes they can have programmed to their memory. If you find that a key or remote does not take, it can be for these reasons, in which case you will need further assistance. Step 7: Test the Key(s) and Remote(s)

Once you have programmed your new keys, it is important to test them to ensure they work properly. Check if they turn on your vehicle’s engine, as well as activate the alarm and power locks if any remotes were programmed.

Step 8: Erasing Keys and Remotes (Optional)

Key Process

As in the “Program Key” section of your vehicle you will enter into the immobilization menu option with the following: “Add a key,” “Erase key,” “Advanced,” and “help.” You will then proceed into the “Erase keys” setting. As with programming a key, erasing a key will also require you to present your programmed original key (master key) within the ignition of your vehicle. Please note that the one key you present into your vehicle’s ignition for this process will become the only working key out in existence. To proceed, place your working within your vehicle’s ignition then turn 2 clicks into the “on” position. Hit any “Yes” or “Ok” options on the programming phone. Your vehicle’s security light should turn on briefly and a new prompt will appear on your programming phone asking you to remove the key. Once this is done the current key in your possession is now the only working key remaining out in the world.

Remote Process

If there are any other remotes programmed to the vehicle, you can choose to erase them by following this procedure. Switch the ignition to the "on" position and enter the remote section on the programming app. Follow the “erase remote” instructions on the app. Click "Yes" on the app to continue the erasing procedure, this will then prompt you to select a type for the remote. Use trial and error here if you do not know the type until you see a connection success prompt. Once successful, remove the key, and insert it back in and turn the key to the “on” position. Make sure that if your remote is a remote key (your remote is attached to your key) that the remote buttons are pointing upwards toward you. This will give you easy access for future steps. Press the lock and unlock buttons on the working remote at the same time for one second, then follow by pressing the lock button once more. You should hear a beep from the vehicle, indicating a successful erase procedure of all other remotes existing in the world, except the remote which was used for the procedure. Test this by pressing the remote buttons on your remote, locking and unlocking the vehicle. Make sure to remove the key from the ignition before testing. At this point there are no other working remotes existing out in the world except the one you used for this procedure. Congratulations.

What is an FCCID and where do I find it? (Plus Circuit Board Information)

An FCC ID on a car remote or wireless key fob is the regulatory certification number used to certify the fob (remote) complies to wireless emissions standards. It is primarily to certify safety and certifies that your device does not emit harmful electromagnetic radiation.

At Tom’s Key Company, however, an FCCID is used as a helpful identifier for key remotes and smart keys. In most cases knowing your vehicle manufactured key's FCCID allows us to confirm that the key you wish to purchase from Tom's Key Company will function for your vehicle. Please be aware the FCCID of our key you will be purchasing and your original vehicle manufactured key do not have to match. Our product description on our smart keys and remotes will indicate which FCCIDs said smart key or remote will it serve. If you do not find this information on a product page please reach out via chat or at help@tomskey.com.

In order to find your FCCID for your vehicle's key you will need to refer to your vehicle's handbook, inspect the inside of your key, or in very rare occasions need to contact your vehicle’s dealership. The most common DIY solution for finding your FCCID is turning your remote or smart key over, or on occasions having to split your remote open to find the digits within. To do this properly do the following:

Take a flat head screwdriver or a strong flat metal surface and gently try to split your smart key or remote.
Once open, a tag written “FCCID” should be seen within your device, this will denote your FCCID number.

The process is that simple. However, there is one additional step to do in order to further confirm compatibility (especially when in regard to Toyota vehicles). Checking the circuit board number.

To find the circuit board number you will have to carefully remove and inspect the circuit board. It is important to not touch the center of the circuit board with your fingers and simply hold the circuit board from its outside edges. Our demonstration video above will best show you how to find this information with precaution.

To double check compatibility, compare your original keys to your newly received key(s). At first glance the keys should be very similar or exactly identical.

For remotes, in most cases remotes should also resemble one another, however more importantly, knowing your remote(s) and vehicle’s matching FCCID is imperative. To simplify, an FCCID is simply a code that denotes compatibility for us here at Tom’s Key Company between a remote and vehicle’s frequency. To find your vehicle’s FCCID and compare your original remote with your new received remote please review the instructions found here.

Step 2: Plugging in the Extension Cable

Locate the OBD2 port in your vehicle. It is usually a wide aperture that can be found near your vehicle’s foot brake or the surrounding area. In some cases, you may need to remove a panel or a piece of plastic to access it.

Then take the supplied extension cable, line it up, and plug it into the OBD2 port. Assure it is gently but properly inserted, as having an incorrectly inserted cable can lead to issues during programming.

Step 3: Connect the Programmer

Connect the programmer to the cable and screw it in tightly to ensure it doesn't accidentally come disconnected during the programming process.

Once connected, you will see lights on the programmer indicating Bluetooth, vehicle, and power status power on.

Step 4: Assure the Provided Smartphone is Bluetooth Connected

Make sure Bluetooth is turned to “on” on the phone's settings. If this is done the “Bluetooth” portion of the programmer should go from red to blue or already be blue while interacting with the programming app on the phone during the next step.

Important Note Prior to Programming

At this point it makes logical sense to mention that prior to programming extra keys, if you desire for your keys to be the only of its kind out in the world, (especially in the case of second hand ownership of vehicle) you may want to review Step 5: Program the Smart Key, but begin with Step 8: Erasing Smart Keys. This is because the erasing smart key procedure only leaves one working key in existence (The key you present during the erase key procedure).

Step 5: Locate Your Security Light

Before we begin programming your new key(s), locate the security light in your vehicle which blinks when no keys are in the ignition. The security light is a blinking red light that indicates whether functional keys are in the ignition. It can be found in different locations depending on the model and year of your vehicle. Look for it around the ignition, on the dashboard, near the steering wheel vents, or central dash of your vehicle. Once you've located the security light, we can proceed to program the keys.

Step 6: Program the Smart Key

The programmer app should show on the phone provided by Tom’s Key Company. Click the app and open the app. Once within the app select the make of vehicle you’ll be programming (Toyota, Scion, or Lexus) and accept any terms and conditions related to the vehicle after reviewing them.

Proceed to set your vehicle to the “on” position without turning on the engine. For push to start vehicles select the “smart key system” option on the programming phone. Then select auto identify so that the programmer may begin identifying your model of vehicle.

If the auto identification does not work you will need to manually find your vehicle from the screen options.

Once your vehicle is selected from the menu you will arrive at a screen where the following options will be available: “Add a smart key,” “Erase smart keys,” “Advanced,” and “help.” Don’t go into the “advanced” section unless instructed to do so by one of our agents as this can cause issues.

In order to begin creating a new smart key, select “Add a smart key.” A prompt will appear stating to make contact with your working key upon the “Start/ Stop” button. Proceed to do so in a timely manner as there is a 10 second window to do this right. Once completed then proceed to present the new and/or unprogrammed key to your vehicle’s “Start/ Stop” button just like previously done with your working/ existing key. Note you should hold the new and/ or unprogrammed remote up to the “Start/ Stop” button until you hear your vehicle beep. Once you hear this beep you will see that the programming phone will prompt you with a “Programming Success” prompt. Congratulations on your new key, they are ready to test.

In the event you hear no beep and/or have no prompt, you should still proceed to Step 6: Test the Smart Key(s), as in some rare instances both these acknowledgements can fail yet the key still programs.

Remember Toyotas, Scion, and Lexus do have a maximum amount of keys and remotes they can have programmed to their memory. If you find that a key or remote does not take, it can be for these reasons, in which case you will need further assistance. Step 7: Test the Smart Key(s)

Once you have programmed your new smart keys, it is important to test them to ensure they work properly. Check if they can lock and unlock the doors and activate the alarm. Also, verify that each smart key can start the vehicle by taking the keys not in use as far away from the car and trying them one by one.

Step 8: Erasing Smart Keys (Optional)

As in the “Program Smart Key” section of your vehicle you will enter into the menu option with the following: “Add a smart key,” “Erase smart keys,” “Advanced,” and “help.” You will then proceed into the “Erase smart keys” setting. As with programming a smart key, erasing a smart key will also require you to present your programmed key to your “Start/ Stop” button on your vehicle. Please note that the one key you present will become the only working key out in existence. To proceed, place your working smart key on the “Start/ Stop” button for a few seconds. You may hear a beep which signifies all other working keys have been erased. In some instances it may be a simple prompt on the programming phone. Once either of these have been confirmed, the “Erasing Smart Key” procedure is complete.

How Can I Get A Key For My Vehicle?

In order to successfully order a spare key with us you must find your vehicle in our vehicle search. This will then provide you with the available items for your vehicle. 

If you do not find any key options for your vehicle within our vehicle search, please reach out at Help@tomskey.com as we may have a solution for you.

It is important to know that in order to successfully program a fully functioning spare key, you will need to order the following items:

→ A programmer to pair your new key with your vehicle. 

→ A key of your key type (smart key, fob, transponder key, etc.)

→ Optionally, our Key By Photo service in order to have the key be pre-cut and ready to go upon delivery. (Please be advised traditional turn key vehicle keys will not be able to be programmed without a cut key in most instances)

Additionally, you will need a preexisting functional key.

A "working" or "functional" key is simply a key that can turn your ignition and/ or turn on your vehicle.

This is the only requirement needed to program a key or fob with Tom's Key Company products and nothing else.

If your key is capable of turning on your vehicle, then you have a "working" or "functional" key capable of programming new spare keys from Tom's Key Company.

Please don't forget to check proper matching of your new key with your old key, this includes look/style of the key and any part numbers or FCCIDs on your keys.

The following is an informational guide on our TSL products. This will include both the TSL-1 and TSL-2 general information. Information is subject to change in light of new developments or tools.

What is a TSL programmer?

The TSL programmer’s use is in its name. It is a programmer specifically designed for Toyota spectrum vehicles: Toyota, Scion, and Lexus.

What’s the difference between a TSL-1 and a TSL-2?

The TSL-1 is mainly capable of programming transponder keys and basic remotes. The TSL-2 programmer, on the other hand, has the TSL-1’s capability to program both transponder keys and basic remotes, as well as smart fobs for push-button start vehicles. Additionally, it can also erase old or lost keys to your vehicle. Because of its advanced capabilities, the TSL-2 programmer is a slight bit more expensive than the TSL-1.

Can I purchase a TSL programmer?

Both the TSL-1 and TSL-2 are currently only for rental.

How long is the rental period for a TSL programmer?

Rental periods for both the TSL-1 and TSL-2 are for 30 days from the date you receive the product. In the event that you are having problems we can extend the rental period so long as this is communicated, therefore your deposit will not be deducted in any kind of way.

Can the TSL programmers program more than one vehicle?

Both the TSL-1 and the TSL-2 can program multiple vehicles with one rental. Meaning if you have multiple Toyotas you wish to program you would only need to rent one programming unit.

What is the programming process like?

Depending on whether you’re programming a key, remote or both, it is pretty simple.
The only thing to keep in mind is that programming a key and a remote are two different processes although sometimes your key is a 2 in 1 remote key.

Will the TSL programmer work for a key not purchased from your website?

In most situations, yes. However we can’t fully guarantee this as this is a variable that can’t be proven through testing, as there are millions of different types of keys in the world. But in theory they all use similar tools and we find that in most cases the TSL programmers are successful.

What can prevent me from programming using a TSL programmer?

Usually not having a master key is a dead stop in anyone's programming project. It is essential to make certain that you have a master key for your Toyota, Scion, or Lexus vehicle and not a valet key, as a valet key will not be able to program a new spare key.

In order to assure all things to run smoothly during your DIY project, Tom's Key has created this article to aid you in identifying whether you have a master key or valet key.

What is a master key and a valet key, and what are the differences?

Master keys and valet keys serve the same function of turning on your car, however their use cases are a bit different, especially when it comes to programming a new spare key.

It is important to note that without a master key it is likely that you will not be able to program a new key as most vehicles and programmers require this.

How do I know if I have a master key or valet key?

Typically there are some key discerning differences. For one, master keys have different capabilities being able to open your trunk and glove box using the key. If this is not the case, your key is most likely a valet key.

Another way to know whether you have a valet key is that valet keys look different from an original key. In the case with Honda as an example, Honda typically makes their valet keys with a grey head. Some manufacturers will also not include a logo on the valet key. Additionally there is even a difference in size from a master key to a valet key, with a valet key being shorter in length.

Lastly, in vehicle's such as Toyota, Scion, and Lexus there are lights and blinking patterns on the vehicles' security feature found on the vehicle's dashboard.
